Advanced technology improves emergency care at Alberta Health Services
Alberta Health Services needed to prioritize information technology efforts in their emergency departments. To help prioritize information technology efforts, the AHS team evaluates and coordinates IT requests across multiple emergency sites and ensures alignment with provincial priorities. The AHS long-term vision is to achieve a full electronic health record with clinical documentation and clinical decision support. “Patient safety is our top priority,” AHS Physician Tom Rich, M.D., clinical informatics, said. “Working with end users from across the Calgary Zone emergency departments, we’re focusing on the things that are really going to help patients.”
With Allscripts help, AHS was able to:
- Reduce time from triage to antibiotics for patients with sepsis within four months
- Standardize care plans to help reduce ED visits and cost, resulting in estimated savings of $250,000
- Provide 100% of physicians access to clinical performance indicators.
