Using virtual health assistants for COVID-19 pandemic and beyond

NOTE: Allscripts recently developed a virtual series of presentations to make best use of what we had planned to feature in our booth at HIMSS20. In this session, we explore a platform designed to provide care communication virtually.

The need for virtual health communication, education and care has never been more urgent. In response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Allscripts strategic partner, Conversa, developed Coronavirus Health Chats as a public service. Conversa’s Conversational AI Virtual Care platform helps healthcare organizations monitor, manage and engage with its patients at scale more efficiently than ever before.

Conversa’s personalized, automated digital conversation experiences enable healthcare organizations to engage their patients and communities across use cases ranging from chronic, acute, perioperative, cancer, OBGYN, wellness, etc., with a frequency and at a scale that would be prohibitive with clinicians, nurses and health coaches. It helps care teams engage patients between visits to improve health outcomes and patient satisfaction, all while reducing operating and medical costs.

The platform collects patient-generated health data and assesses it in real time to determine patient signals, such as a biometric reading or patient-reported outcome. This determines if the patient is on track with their care journey and how to motivate them to continue. If they are off track, we use behavioral techniques to encourage them back on track (education, recommendations, etc.). Conversa recognizes when a patient is off track and needs to be connected to a scarce care team resource (ex: send a doctor’s phone number to the patient chat).

Conversa’s Coronavirus Health Chats

Conversa’s clinically intelligent consumer engagement platform expands the use of virtual care and telemedicine in a meaningful way so that people receive information on the coronavirus outbreak.

Our team developed Coronavirus Health Chats to:

  • Educate patients about the virus
  • Enable patients to assess their risk of exposure as it rapidly changes
  • Help patients practice preventative care
  • Offer ways for patients to symptom check
  • Provide guidance to local resources

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Conversa has been rolling out several virtual health programs developed with top clinicians (and CDC guidance) to help manage the outbreak. Several health systems are using Conversa’s Infectious Disease Chat programs to offer public education, deliver lab results with guidance, provide education for those that are self-quarantined, and care team employee communication and safety checks. For more information on these Coronavirus Health Chat Programs see www.coronavirushealthchats.com or http://www.conversahealth.com/.

Conversa forged a strategic partnership several years ago with Allscripts to transform doctor-patient communications. For Allscripts clients, Conversa is known as Allscripts Engage, and gives the Allscripts client base of more than 2,500 hospitals and health systems access to Conversa’s Conversation Platform. Allscripts Engage serves as the patient-facing touchpoint for the Allscripts population health management platform, CareInMotion™, and is also sold as a standalone offering.
