Boosting productivity and effectiveness across a practice with Allscripts partnership

Revenue cycle tools are key to success as healthcare organizations look for ways to better focus on their patients and improve their bottom line.

The Clinics of North Texas (Wichita Falls, Texas, U.S.A.), in operation for more than 100 years, combines a network of more than three dozen physicians in more than 15 medical specialties. It’s the largest independently owned group practice in the Texoma region.

As CIO, I began exploring how to simplify business office operations while improving collections about two years ago. With a staff of 20 in-house employees engaged in billing and collection workflows—and the associated issues encountered with keeping pace with reimbursement requirements and maintaining consistency—I knew there had to be a better way.

We had an issue where we felt that we could get more revenue than what we were collecting. We started doing some research and we found a lot of issues… These were really basic trouble-shooting steps that we should not have to spend time on.

I joined the Clinics of North Texas leadership team in exploring a variety of revenue cycle management services offerings and picked Allscripts because of the close partnership both organizations have developed over the last decade.

We’ve been live on Allscripts Professional EHR™ since 2010, so of course we were going to look at Allscripts for help in this area. The Allscripts team was the only RCMS team we could talk to that understood what we were saying. We didn’t feel like we were going back to square one explaining Business Office 101…some of the other RCMS teams either wanted us to switch practice management systems or EHR systems. Or, they wanted us to change everything we were doing with no good reason.

Understanding the goals

We went live on Allscripts RCMS in August 2019. The transition has been so smooth that A/R days remained stable at 21–24 and collections rose 1.64% in 2019 compared to 2018.

With a physician-owned organization, it’s huge to them when you improve collections. It’s their livelihood. The more we increase revenue, the better off everyone is.

What made Allscripts RCMS feasible was the cost comparison of continuing current in-house operation instead of outsourcing. I compared staff costs with the cost of RCMS. The favorable comparison and reduction of in-house headaches helped make the decision easy.

We should have done this years ago. We wanted to be able to manage proactively instead of historically. We were tired of chasing issues and chasing money.

Allscripts Revenue Cycle Management Services helps me:

  • Keep pace with complex reimbursement requirements
  • Access RCMS expertise and maintain consistency
  • Better managing reimbursement cycles with access to advanced analytics
  • Resolve inefficient billing workflows and work toward continuous improvement
Allscripts partnership

With Allscripts RCMS, clinic staff can focus on their core responsibilities and improve efficiency. Ultimately, this approach boosts productivity and effectiveness across the practice. With Allscripts, we can continue to process claims quickly instead of worrying about collections.

I wholeheartedly recommend any of the Allscripts products we’ve encountered. Any time I have an issue, I have the right Allscripts people to reach out to so that we can get it resolved. Allscripts is more than willing to work with us and understand what our end goal is. It really is a true partnership.
