NEW YORK & CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 30, 2003–
More Physicians To Have Real-Time Paperless Access to TouchWorks EMR
Allscripts Healthcare Solutions (Nasdaq: MDRX), the leading
provider of clinical software and information solutions for
physicians, announced today that Queens-Long Island Medical Group,
P.C. (QLIMG), one of the largest medical groups in the New York
metropolitan area, will expand its use of TouchWorks(TM) electronic
medical record (EMR) software, adding additional physicians and more
functionality. Currently, 100 physicians at QLIMG use TouchWorks
Charge(TM) to increase the accuracy and efficiency of their billing
and reduce paperwork. With this agreement, QLIMG has committed to
provide TouchWorks Note(TM) to 150 physicians and document imaging,
dictation management, clinical notation, and computerized physician
order entry (CPOE) functionality for 250 of their physicians over the
next twelve months.
Technology Solutions for Improved Patient Care
The expanded use of the TouchWorks EMR will enhance the safety and
the efficiency of care for patients. Currently, TouchWorks streamlines
billing processes for QLIMG physicians, so they can spend less time on
paperwork and more time with their patients. Physicians at QLIMG will
use handheld, wireless Pocket PC devices (the iPAQ(TM) from HP) to
order tests, view test results, and dictate clinical notes into the
patient’s record directly at the point of care. These same handheld
devices will also allow physicians to electronically prescribe
medications and automatically check for potentially harmful drug
interactions or allergic reactions. Physicians will also use
technology including the new Microsoft-designed, wireless Tablet PC’s,
to electronically access the patient’s entire file, including paper
forms that will be scanned electronically and included as a digital
image in the patient record, providing better access to information
with less paperwork and less cost.
“With the growing demands of patient care, QLIMG believes that
technology is the only solution to provide higher quality patient care
while containing costs and the TouchWorks EMR is the best tool for us
to accomplish these goals,” said Michael Sparacino, Chief Operating
Officer of Queens-Long Island Medical Group, P.C. “The modular
approach of TouchWorks helped QLIMG physicians to get on and get going
along our path to full clinical automation.”
Evolution, not Revolution
The TouchWorks EMR offers a unique modular approach, allowing
physicians to start with one or a few applications and evolve over
time to a complete electronic medical record. QLIMG, started with
TouchWorks Charge software in 2001 and, based on their positive
results, decided to implement the entire TouchWorks EMR for all of
their physicians.
“Our industry experience indicates that practices who provide
tools to physicians that allow them to begin by targeting their most
pressing needs and time consuming tasks will be more successful in
rapidly implementing an electronic medical record and getting the
return on investment that everyone wants,” stated Glen Tullman, Chief
Executive Officer of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions. “The old idea of
forcing physicians to use a monolithic, all or nothing system, has
been proven unsuccessful. QLIMG is a leading example of how well a
practice can leverage our modular implementation of the TouchWorks
solution, beginning with a select set of functionality targeted at
real business issues physicians face every day, and rapidly grow into
a full EMR with real, measurable returns.”
