ORLANDO, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 25, 2004–
Clinic saves nearly $1 million in their first year of using TouchWorks
EMR
Today, the Microsoft Healthcare Users Group (MS-HUG) named Central
Utah Multi-Specialty Clinic (CUMC) “Clinic of the Year” at the
Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2004 Annual
Conference. The annual MS-HUG awards recognize healthcare
organizations and individuals who exhibit the best use of
Microsoft-based products, and independent software vendors that
develop solutions based on Microsoft technology for the healthcare
industry. CUMC, the largest independent multi-specialty group in the
state of Utah, was recognized for their use of an Electronic Medical
Record (EMR), which improved quality and patient care while saving
the clinic nearly $1 million in their first year. In related news, Dr.
Jeffery Johnson, the lead physician from CUMC in the EMR
implementation project, received the MS-HUG “Physician of the Year”
award for his physician leadership in implementing this project.
“Our initiative, from day one, has been driven by our physicians’
need for better information at their fingertips. The solution we
utilized made it possible for our physicians to implement and quickly
realize a return on our investment,” said Scott Barlow, Chief
Executive Officer of Central Utah Multi-Specialty Clinic. “Their rapid
adoption of the technology was a key factor in recognizing the
financial results we attained in our very first year of using the
EMR.”
CUMC, a 59-physician group in Provo, Utah, with practices in 9
locations treating 200,000 active patients, implemented the
TouchWorks(TM) EMR from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions (Nasdaq: MDRX)
in 2002 and, over the course of a year, documented nearly $1 million
in positive financial impact. The group projects a 5-year cumulative
savings of over $8 million. The clinic published a study concerning
their results in the 2004 Winter Edition of the Journal of Healthcare
Information Management.
“While physicians, patients and even politicians intrinsically
know that information technology is the key to providing higher
quality and more cost effective healthcare, the industry lacked
clearly documented financial data that would justify the cost of
implementing those solutions,” noted Glen Tullman, Chief Executive
Officer of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions. “Allscripts Healthcare
Solutions applauds CUMC’s efforts to codify the tangible, hard dollar
benefits that clinical automation can provide and congratulates CUMC
on this well-deserved recognition.”
