CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 15, 2006–Allscripts (Nasdaq:MDRX),
the leading provider of clinical software, connectivity and
information solutions that physicians use to improve healthcare,
announced today an agreement with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North
Carolina (BCBSNC), the state’s largest health insurer, to offer
Allscripts TouchWorks(TM) Rx+ electronic prescribing software to up to
500 physicians throughout the state. The agreement is part of BCBSNC’s
statewide ePrescribe(SM) initiative, which provides funding to
accelerate physician adoption of electronic prescribing.
Under the agreement, BCBSNC will provide up to 500
high-prescribing North Carolina physicians a one-year subscription to
the web-based Allscripts ePrescribing software, as well as a handheld
personal digital assistant (PDA) and wireless network hardware, free
of charge. To encourage rapid adoption of the technology, the software
will be pre-populated with each physician’s patient information, and
Allscripts will provide physicians with product training,
implementation and education.
“We are very pleased to be working with Allscripts to offer their
TouchWorks software to doctors in North Carolina as part of our
ePrescribe initiative,” said Ron Smith, PharmD, vice president of
Corporate Pharmacy for BCBSNC. “We’re confident that they’ll help us
increase the penetration of electronic prescribing in our state.”
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, an independent
licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, is a leader in
delivering innovative health care products, services and information
to more than 3.3 million members, including approximately 691,000
served on behalf of other Blue Plans.
“Electronic prescribing is a critical first step to achieving
important patient safety, quality, cost and office efficiency goals
for physician practices,” said Allscripts Chief Executive Officer Glen
Tullman. “Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina realizes that
electronic prescribing is the future, as well as a first step to full
automation, and requires software that provides physicians an
opportunity to quickly move to a full electronic health record.”
TouchWorks Rx+ helps clinicians improve patient safety by
identifying harmful drug interactions; reduces pharmacy call-backs by
providing more legible and formulary-compliant prescriptions; and
improves patient convenience by speeding refills and transmitting
prescriptions electronically to their pharmacy of choice. It is
available on a wide variety of web-enabled devices including desktop
computers, laptops, Tablet PCs, and as part of the complete
TouchWorks(TM) Electronic Health Record (EHR). It is accessed via a
secure web browser, enabling physicians to quickly prescribe, check
for drug interactions, access medication histories and review drug
reference information at the point of care, whether they are in the
office or working remotely.
