Supporting veterans: Real-time information sharing supports real-time need

In honor of Memorial Day this week, it’s only right to discuss how proud we are at Allscripts to know that our solutions are used every day to help our clients care for our United States Veterans and their families.

I recently had the opportunity to speak at the Spring VA Healthcare Summit in Washington, DC and shared more about our work.

Allscripts clients treat and care for hundreds of thousands of veterans and their family members every year. To quantify the impact, we pulled claims data from our client base to see how many unique clients, providers and claims had been submitted to the different variations of the VA Fee Basis Programs and the Tricare plans.

How Allscripts helps veterans

In the one-year period we looked into, 2,326 unique Allscripts clients submitted claims to the two programs that are related to veteran care. Those client organizations involved more than 23,000 different care providers and over 400,000 patients. When you add it all up, that’s 2.4 million transactions related to the care of a United States veteran or their family member from determining eligibility, to sending patient statements out, to processing individual claims.

As the daughter of a Navy veteran, it makes me feel great to know that we are serving veterans every day in many ways. I think it’s also important to point out that these numbers don’t even include care for veterans like my dad, who utilizes Medicare and other supplemental plans to cover his care and has all his claims covered outside of the VA system. It will be interesting to see if the MISSION Act, which goes into effect later this summer, has an impact on the number of veterans who chose to receive care outside the VA system, specifically from a provider using an Allscripts solution.

Claim-scrubbing solution on the provider side

We’re also proud to be partners with Alpha II to make our Allscripts Practice Management and claims submission process through PayerPath even more successful when providers are submitting claims to the VA Fee Basis Program or Tricare. Alpha II has been a long-time part of the VA reimbursement solution. The company helped draft many requirements and forms the VA uses to process claims. Our Allscripts clients have a much higher chance of getting claims approved and paid because of the synergies using Alpha II in our products.

The MISSION Act will provide more options

Launching on June 6, 2019, the MISSION Act will enable the VA to consolidate the department’s community care efforts into a single, easier-to-use program giving veterans the ability to choose healthcare providers in their own communities.

The MISSION Act strengthens the VA’s ability to deliver trusted, easy-to-access, high-quality care at VA facilities, virtually through telehealth and in community settings.

Even if a veteran doesn’t live near a VA facility, it’s a pretty sure bet that they live near an Allscripts client. That increases the chances that we’ll be serving more veterans in the near future.

Allscripts GiveBack with USO

Another way Allscripts serves our military families is through our GiveBack program.

During the 2019 Allscripts Client Experience (ACE) User Groups in Atlanta, New Orleans, Chicago, Philadelphia and Phoenix, our clients and employees took part in a GiveBack activity for veterans. Allscripts partnered with Build-a-Bear and the United Services Organizations (USO), a nonprofit-charitable corporation that provides live entertainment, social facilities and other programs to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families. We decided that cuddly teddy bears are the perfect gift to children in military families who have parents being deployed and other stresses.

During the GiveBack activity, clients sew red satin hearts into each of the bears to fill them with love and decorate white shirts for the Teddy bears with fabric pens. Then, they fill out birth certificates, name their bears and take pictures with them before packaging them in their “condos” (cardboard houses) to be sent to children of United States Armed Forces members.

With the help of our clients, Build-A-Bear and the USO, we will deliver 250 bears to families of our military. Our clients expressed how much they enjoyed building the Teddy bears and participating in an Allscripts GiveBack event for such a great cause. Allscripts GiveBack teams have plans to continue to support our military and grow our partnerships with the USO.

I’m proud that Allscripts contributes to the well-being of our veterans who have served and sacrificed for our country. Thank you to all of the veterans our clients are taking care of today!
