3 billion data shares (and counting)

Allscripts hit another major utilization milestone at the end of 2017: our health IT ecosystem has enabled more than 3 billion API data shares in less than five years. Furthermore, the pace is accelerating; 2017 was the first time Allscripts’ Application Programming Interface (API) platform enabled 1 billion data shares within a single year.

This accomplishment is evidence that the Allscripts strategy of having open, intelligent APIs is gaining momentum and contributing to our clients’ success. Allscripts operates its database on Microsoft SQL and hosts some of its cloud-based API endpoints in Microsoft’s Azure Cloud.

As more developers use the platform, and our clients continue to realize the benefits of layering applications to meet their needs, we’ll continue to see this pace accelerate faster.

What do we mean by a data share?

A data share occurs when an application either retrieves or delivers data to an Allscripts clinical or financial solution.  Each year, we have increased the number of data shares facilitated by Allscripts APIs:


Today, more than 6,000 third-party developers work within the Allscripts Developer Portal to deploy solutions using FHIR-enabled and Allscripts’ proprietary APIs. These relationships are in addition to the 170+ Allscripts Developer Program partners. Nearly 200 certified apps are currently available to our users through the company’s application store.

Momentum will continue in 2018 and beyond

In the past, healthcare providers were more proprietary about healthcare data. But today, they recognize that protections are in place to share data securely, and that good things are going to come from it. Government mandates for data exchange help drive their interest in removing technical barriers  to integrate with third-party applications more easily.

Providers recognize the advantages of using APIs to solve business and clinical challenges more quickly than ever before. The mindset is shifting so that the first question we ask is, “Can we solve this with an app?” because they are much faster, lower cost and easier to deploy than making large-scale enhancements and upgrades to core systems. It enables us to be nimble and keep costs low for our users.

As clients open up their healthcare transactions, it will change the healthcare consumer experience, too. For example, patients can now see provider reviews, available options for care and providers, and estimated out-of-pocket costs. Patients will be able to make more informed decisions about their care, which will ultimately result in better quality and lower costs.
