SIU Medicine

Better preventative care documentation

Based in Springfield, Illinois, SIU Medicine is a university-owned physician practice dedicated to serving patients in central and southern Illinois. Home to more than 250 healthcare professionals, SIU Medicine provides primary care as well as specialized treatment services to more than 170 outreach sites in nearly 90 Illinois communities.

When teams began building content as part of the organization’s transition to TouchWorks EHR in 2015, SIU Medicine developed a stronger focus on documenting preventative care screenings and quality measures. The project, which launched in 2017, has standardized documentation, increased compliance and improved base quality measures.

Documenting preventative care improves quality measures

SIU Medicine used the Quality and Resource Utilization Report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as the national benchmarks for preventative care quality measures. The CMS uses claims, registries and EHR information to develop these benchmarks to help organizations measure their individual performance.

”One year in, and groups are seeing the benefit of the flowsheet. They don’t have to dig and find their notes on whether or not they did something last year.”

By standardizing the location of this tool and documentation process, SIU Medicine increased its screening for fall risk from 17% in 2016 to nearly 78% in 2017, surpassing the national benchmark of 57%. Screenings for depression increased from 3% in 2016 to 49% in 2017, nearing the national benchmark of 52%.
