Allscripts supply chain partner offers free guide to locate consumable hospital supplies
It’s well known how difficult hospitals find it to locate critical supplies now. The need for ventilators and personal protective equipment, for example, is well documented.
The same is true of consumable medical supplies, those items that are usually single-use and disposable, like bandages and antiseptics.
We have compiled and just released a free resource guide of critical supplies required by hospitals to care for patients with COVID-19. Because supplies are so limited, this guide provides functional alternatives, too. Most importantly, the guide also includes a wide variety of distributors for the products.
As a supply chain content enablement company, Meperia recognizes during this COVID-19 pandemic that we all have an important role to play in supporting one another.
Working with clinicians, we have identified key attributes for each product family and found functional alternative items. This guide can be used to identify viable substitutes during product shortages like what we face today.
By compiling this data into a single resource, we hope to make life a little easier for healthcare organizations as they serve patients and their communities.
The targeted guide was extracted from millions of medical-surgical items and more than 20,000 manufacturer catalogs that reside in Meperia’s Virtual Item Master. That’s how we can quickly and easily identify products that are functional alternatives. Functional alternatives are items that share either the same attributes as the primary product or have most attributes in common with the primary product.
How to use the guide
We believe shortages will only increase over time. If a hospital’s usual vendor doesn’t have a needed item, they can look within our guide at the other options for a solution.
In a common scenario, a customer begins by looking for different suppliers for a product they usually purchase from a vendor that is out of stock. The search by manufacturer catalog number will show not only their current vendor but also other suppliers of the identical product.
Over time, the manufacturer can also run out of a product. In those cases, the functional alternative search reveals several functional alternative items. The item descriptions provide the key information needed to determine if the alternative will meet the hospital’s needs.
This list is currently on Meperia’s website and will be updated as new information becomes available. This resource guide is our way of helping anyone in the healthcare industry sourcing products to ultimately keep everyone safe.
