Electronic health records (EHRs) are the backbone of health IT infrastructure, but they can’t be all things to all people. For truly connected communities of health, EHRs must talk with other applications and solutions.
Integrating separate technologies has not always been easy. Traditionally, these projects require committee meetings and complicated interfaces that can take months, or even years, to complete.

Rapid installations at Allscripts annual user group conference
At the Allscripts Client Experience (ACE) 2016 conference held in August, we didn’t just talk to our users about the technologies available on Allscripts Application Store. We actually activated about a dozen applications for our clients during the event – in fact, one installation took less than an hour from purchase to going live.
This client learned about the application in an education session and visited the booth afterwards to learn more. With help from our developer program station, the client activated the application on its production server, all within one hour of first learning about it. It’s the second year in a row we’ve installed apps for our clients at ACE in less than an hour.
Another client, Navin Jain, chief information officer and director of billing services at Cookeville Medical Center (Cookeville, Tennessee, U.S.A.), told us about his experience installing one of our certified third-party apps:
We had seen information for QueueDr, an application that texts patients to fill cancelled appointments. We previewed it online, then we talked with QueueDr’s CEO about it at ACE. It only took us one day to get connected. I thought something like this might take few weeks, but it really only took a couple of days for everyone’s schedules to line up for our practice to customize and start using it.
QueueDr is awesome. It’s already filling cancellations without taking up any staff time. Our beta testing on two providers shows that they are definitely keeping a consistent fill rate of 25 to 30 patients per day. Because we’ve only had it about a month, I don’t have exact numbers, but it’s definitely saving time and reducing costs.
With the Allscripts open platform, which we’ve had for 18 years, we have better integration with other third-party developers. It’s a lot more agile – we can literally get things going in a few days. We also have an integration live with Phreesia (to digitize the intake process) that we’ll start actually using in our offices later this month. The more partners in the Allscripts Developer Program, the more products there are that can help practices like ours. I encourage any Allscripts client to check Allscripts Application Store before trying to find your own vendor or build it yourself – chances are it already exists.
Having an open technology platform not only makes it faster and easier to integrate, it makes our EHR more comprehensive. I even signed up for a developer license to create our own solutions. For example, we’ll look at ways to share templates for things like immunization tracking. It’s great that a lot of solutions already exist, and we don’t need to recreate the wheel.
Cookeville Medical Center has exchanged data using Allscripts Open APIs with third-party apps more than 1.2 million times since February 2013.
