Dr. Matt Winkleman, an Allscripts client from rural Illinois, and Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts, were both invited to serve as expert witnesses on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, during the Energy & Commerce Sub-committee on Health’s hearing on HITECH implementation. As part of Congress’ responsibility to ensure the successful implementation of legislation they’ve passed, oversight hearings such as these are periodically held so Members can hear from various constituencies in the affected industry. Glen and Matt were pleased to provide their perspectives on the increasingly important role health IT is playing in the delivery of top quality medicine in this country today.

On March 31, 2010 the DEA published its “Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances” IFR that establishes rules for electronically prescribing controlled substances. This is a major milestone and will require significant changes in the industry to turn this rule into reality. In the meantime, providers can and should continue to electronically create and print controlled substance prescriptions using their current prescribing solutions.
