FAQs
Can a physician legally dispense prescription pharmaceuticals
from their office?
Yes, a physician can dispense medications to
their own patients. There are only four states that have some
restrictions (New York, Montana, Texas, and Massachusetts).
Our regulatory specialists can assist you in providing your
states specific information.
Is in-office dispensing profitable?
Revenues will vary depending
on the practice specialty, size of the practice, and the payer
mix. Most physicians can realize revenues anywhere from $25,000
to over $75,000.
How much does it cost to start?
Allscripts provides a turn-key
dispensing program that does not require any start-up costs
or initial investments.
Will I need additional staff to dispense?
No additional staff
should be required to incorporate the Allscripts dispensing
solution into your practice. Allscripts sends the medications
in prepackaged, unit-of-use, prescription labeled and safety
sealed containers so there's no need to count pills or label
bottles, allowing for efficient and easy dispensing. It is
as easy and often easier than dispensing the samples you dispense
today.
Who can dispense the medications in the office?
In most states it can be an employee working under the direction
and supervision of the physician. In other states the physician,
registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant
are required to do the dispensing. Our team of regulatory experts
can help you in providing your state's requirements.
