CHADIS: A glimpse into the future of pediatrics

It’s great to have CHADIS as part of the Allscripts Developer Program, so pediatricians using Allscripts TouchWorks® EHR can access information and insights provided by the CHADIS pre-screening tools and assessments.

Experts agree, this is the type of solution that offers us a glimpse of the future of health care:

“CHADIS is the best example of what the future of pediatrics should look like.”

Dr. Neal Halfon, Professor, UCLA*

CHADIS couples early detection with a holistic view of the patients — including physical condition and mental state. Using efficient tools helps pediatricians offer additional resources and engage collaboratively with patients and family members.

How CHADIS works

CHADIS, which stands for Child Health and Development Interactive System, gives clinicians evidence-based screening tools to help meet American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures and Medicaid guidelines. Allscripts has certified CHADIS to deliver screening results directly into TouchWorks EHR.

Clinicians can select from more than 200 questionnaires depending upon the child’s age and visit type. Using scheduling information in Touchworks EHR, CHADIS can automatically assign questionnaires based on the visit type. Using smartphones, tablets or computers, parents and teens complete online questionnaires about behavior, development, health risks, home situations and child strengths at home or doctor’s office.

These questionnaires cover all the routine data collection normally required for child health supervision, including the major validated development and autism screening tools (e.g., ASQ-3™, M-CHAT-R™). CHADIS also collects information on nutrition, sleep, exercise and other health and safety topics.

From infants to teens, CHADIS offers options

Pediatric patients have significantly different needs as they grow from infants to toddlers to children to teens. CHADIS has options that can address needs of different age groups.

For example, CHADIS automatically creates a MemoryBook Care Portal for infants along with a virtual baby book that records developmental achievements. Parents can upload photos and make comments. Within the MemoryBook Care Portal families can search for resources and save them to their own My Resources section to read or print at their convenience.

And did you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends teenagers communicate directly and privately with their doctors? It’s important that they are engaged in their own health in a secure and confidential way. With CHADIS, adolescents can complete self-report tools, including the PHQ-9.

CHADIS addresses mental health issues, including a comprehensive array of tools. American Board of Pediatrics has approved Part 4 Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit for quality improvement programs using CHADIS for autism and developmental screening.

Forward-looking application making a difference today

More than 5,000 clinicians across the U.S. are using CHADIS today to help identify potential health concerns early and proactively treat them. There are financial benefits, too. CHADIS estimates that it can help practices earn up to an extra $15,000 per year per full-time provider, compared with those who do not currently charge payers for screening.
